Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, a little social Interaction is key for us to thrive as human beings. But, what about now during virtual school? Some may feel unable to connect due to social distancing. I’m here to tell you it’s possible. Read below for tips!
Zoom Breakout Rooms
Many students have agreed that virtual school through zoom can be quite awkward sometimes. What about when your teacher puts you in breakout rooms? Staring at your peer’s faces without saying a word is a whole other level of awkwardness, especially if you don’t know any of them.
Oh, wait! You don’t know any of these people. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other. As hard as it can be, be the first to initiate the conversation if no one is willing to. Unmute yourself and break the ice by greeting everyone and introducing yourself. Turning on your camera can also help people familiarize themselves with your face as remote learning goes on. Being the first to step up and communicate during virtual school can help you connect with many people. I’m not saying you’ll be Bff’s immediately, but it can help in the long run when your school (hopefully) begins in person.
Social Media
Social media can help you become more familiar with the people at your school. To a certain extent, it can help you get to know more about someone and their interests. You may find yourself being able to connect over an awesome television show, a sport you play, or literally anything with someone. Just remember to take breaks often if you find yourself staring at the screen for a long period of time! Oh, and have fun stalking people’s Instagram (just kidding!).
Reconnect
Friends often become distant because life gets so busy with family, school, and extracurriculars. If you know someone you haven’t talked to for a while, reach out to them through technology! Ask them how they are and what they have been up to during this pandemic. It can be difficult to reach out at first and might even be borderline uncomfortable if it’s been a while. But, it can help strengthen your relationship with that person and may help you become closer.
Sports/Clubs
This will vary depending on the school, but my school has opened up sports for students in person (It’s impossible virtually, duh!!) and has started online clubs. Even with different circumstances this year, sports and clubs are the perfect opportunities to develop great relationships with people. You will be seeing the same people consistently, which can make it easier to make new friends.
Establish Boundaries
At the end of the day, technology can never truly replace human interaction. If you want to meet up with someone, let them be aware of your comfort zones. For example, you might be okay with meeting in a restaurant, but not in your house. Keep in mind; it’s always advised to wear a mask and keep yourself distanced. Be sure always to respect other people’s limitations and comforts as well when spending time together.
This pandemic has challenged us in so many ways. While it can be difficult, it’s proven how adaptable we are as human beings. Plus, it’s made us super grateful for technology!
