This year is different from last year. Instead of taking the bus, you’re sitting at your desk. Instead of opening your locker, you’re opening your computer. Instead of entering the classroom, you're entering a Zoom call with just a click.
With the pandemic still going strong and the risk still high, virtual school has been the alternative to provide safety for students and staff.
But of course, sitting in a Zoom class is not the same as sitting at a school desk. We often get distracted in the comfort of our home or find ourselves bored with staring at a computer screen the whole day.
How do you learn on a Zoom call and stay attentive?
Here are some tips that I have implemented in my school routine to make the most out of my virtual classes:
Do not wear your PJs! - You might be thinking to yourself: why would I bother wearing clothes I would normally wear outside? I’m at home, and I can wear my comfy pajamas if I want to. Who’s there to stop me? But actually, wearing your PJs tricks your brain into thinking it’s time to sleep. The last thing you want is to doze off while your webcam is on! Wear clothes you would normally wear to school. No, you don’t have to dress up, but a simple T-shirt and pants will do enough to stay attentive.
Pick a spot where you can focus - Who wouldn’t log onto class when they are on their bed? It’s, after all, right there where you can snug up and stay comfy. Although this might sound like a nice option, it isn’t helpful. Your brain associates the bed with sleeping, so you end up feeling groggy while taking notes in class. Sit at a spot where you can focus, like your desk, where there are no distractions. If you don’t have a designated room, you could make yourself a study corner to help you stay focused. This could be your own little nook that is designated only for school with minimal distractions.
Stay organized - Home can be seen as a comfortable place, so it is most likely your spot is unorganized. Moving around to find materials will break your flow of concentration in class. Make sure you have all your supplies for the day, like a notebook, pen, or paper. Also, make sure you have your computer charger!
Keep your webcam on - Not all teachers require you to do this, but turning on your camera will help force you to focus on your class. It will feel like someone is watching you, seeing if you are doing your work. In contrast, if you turn off your camera, you will be more likely to go on your phone or get distracted in other ways.
Be engaged in the lesson - Sure, a Zoom call isn’t ideal, but you still want to make the most out of what you have. In other words, actively participate in the call as if you are in a school setting. Ask questions and engage in discussions. Remember, your teacher is trying to make the class as engaging and fun as possible. It’s only fair if you also do the same.
Ask for help - Finally, don’t be afraid to reach out for help too when you need it! Your classmates and teachers are there to support you during this unprecedented time. This could be on the course material and emotional support as times, especially during virtual school, can be difficult.
Make the most of what you have right now! It will certainly help you in the long run.
